Putting First Things First - Self-Management Skills

One of the secrets to success is knowing and managing your priorities. In this blog, I'm going to show you exactly how to do that.

“Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least." - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

What we create in our minds can manifest in the world depending on the strength of our will and the execution of the most important priorities. Whatever you plan in your head needs to be executed, you need to exercise your independent will towards becoming "principle-centered".

It is the habit-forming that would make your ideas and dreams into reality, this is - "self-management".

What is self-management?

Self-management is the ability to prioritize goals, decide what must be done, and be accountable to complete the necessary actions. And it is your INDEPENDENT WILL, that makes effective self-management possible.

The Common Denominator of Successful People

Let me tell you something. The common denominator that all successful people share isn't hard work, good luck, nor having good connections with others. Though those are important, the one factor that seemed to excel all of the rest is the HABIT OF DOING THE THINGS FAILURES DON'T LIKE TO DO. Don't get me wrong, successful people don't like doing them either, not necessarily, but the strength of their purpose outweighs this negative feeling.

It is their independent will that gives them the power to do something when they don't want to do it. Successful people perform based on values not on impulse. The actual challenge is to manage ourselves, not time. Now, the focus is on building and maintaining relationships and achieving results or P/PC balance.

This focus is well illustrated by the Time Management Matrix above. We spend time in 4 basic ways. Urgent matters are always in our faces, though they are often unimportant. Meanwhile, important matters contribute to your values, mission, and goals with high priority.

Tasks in Quadrant 1 is known as problems or crisis since they are important and urgent. However, focusing solely on these tasks will overwhelm you. You are knocked down before you recover from the first blow.

Effective people avoid unimportant tasks that dominate Quadrant 3 and 4. They also lessen the Quadrant 1 tasks by paying more attention to the ones in Quadrant 2. This is because quadrant 2 is the key to personal management. Therefore, to become effective and achieve success, proactively go after the Quadrant 2 tasks.
